CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois football team begins its preparations for the 2011 season on Sunday at 8:15 a.m., when the Salukis hold their first practice of fall camp.
Players report for camp on Saturday, Aug. 6 and the team holds its first practice the next morning. Southern Illinois has 23 practices scheduled for fall camp, which runs Aug. 7-26. SIU's first scrimmage is set for Saturday, Aug. 13.
Fall camp concludes on Friday, Aug. 26, with a scrimmage at 7 p.m. in Saluki Stadium.
The 2011 season will be the fourth under head coach Dale Lennon, who is 25-11 at SIU with a 19-5 Missouri Valley Football Conference record. Lennon's 25 wins through three seasons are five more than any other Saluki coach in program history has had in their first three years on the job.
This will also be the teams second season in Saluki Stadium, and the Dawgs went 4-2 at home in their inaugural year in the new 15,000-seat facility.
SIU's schedule has five home games and six road contests, which includes three of Southern's first four games on the season.
The Salukis went 5-6 in 2010 and that was the programs first losing season since 2002. SIU was 4-4 in the MVFC last year to finish in a tie for third place.
Despite the down year, Southern Illinois' 75 wins since 2003 are the third-most among all Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) programs.
