Golf finishes eighth at UTA/Waterchase Invitational

ARLINGTON, Texas - The Saluki men's golf team finished the UTA/Waterchase Invitational in eighth place of 19 teams. After the first round, SIU was in 18th place and shot a 312 (+24), but the Salukis rebounded in the second round and climbed ten spots.
"It was the good and the ugly," head coach Leroy Newton said. "We couldn't do anything right that first round, but the guys came out relaxed on that second round and played some great golf. We moved up ten spots, which is pretty impressive against some of the stiff competition we were going against."
Southern Illinois was one of just four schools to shoot a round of 290 or better.
Jeffrey Miller led the Salukis for the second tournament in a row. His second-round 69 (-3) was his second round below 70 in five rounds this season. His two-round total of 146 (+2) tied him for 17th overall and broke his previous career high by five strokes.
Brandon Cauldwell continued to play solid, tying for the team lead in the first round and shooting even par in the second round. Joe Goelzhauser shot an excellent second-round 73 to help the team take 22 strokes off its first-round total.
The team finish was seven spots better than last year's finish at the same tournament, when the Salukis placed 15th of 19.
The tournament was originally going to be a 54-hole tournament, with 36 holes played on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday. After the the third round started, some players were stung by bees from an agitated hive near the 18th green, and play was suspended. After consulting with a beekeeper, officials decided to not count any of the third round.
"We're disappointed we didn't get to play that third round," Newton said. "With the way we finished on Monday, we think we had an opportunity to move up even further."
Wichita State won the tournament by four strokes, shooting a 570 (-6). Sam Houston State (-2) was the only other team under par.
SIU takes next week off before traveling to Bloomington, Ill., for the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate on Oct. 1-2.
