CARBONDALE, Ill. - The SIU baseball team is proud to announce that the team combined to post a 3.229 GPA for the fall 2011 semester, one of the highest GPAs in program history.
"At the beginning of the semester, we set a team goal to have a team GPA of at least a 3.20," Head Coach Ken Henderson said. "To exceed that goal is extremely rewarding and a great testament to the character of this group of kids. Their commitment and dedication to school is something that we are extremely proud of. We also need to give credit to our academic support staff, specifically Kristina Therriault and Jared Fries, for their efforts on our behalf."
Of the 32 student-athletes on the fall roster, 25 of them recorded a GPA of 3.0 or higher this past semester, and three players posted a perfect 4.0.
"Last semester, from the first day, Coach had that 3.20 posted in the clubhouse as our goal," said junior first baseman Chris Serritella who was among the players with a GPA over 3.0 for the semester. "He really harped on being a student-athlete and that the student part comes first. That was our No. 1 priority, to succeed in the classroom, then everything will take care of itself on the field."
