CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois women's basketball team swept the Missouri Valley Conference's weekly awards Monday as Teri Oliver was named Player of the Week and Cartaesha Macklin was named Newcomer of the Week.
The duo was instrumental in helping SIU to a 78-68 win over Missouri State Thursday, which ended the Salukis' 24-game MVC losing streak.
A junior guard, Oliver had a milestone night in SIU's win over the Lady Bears. She scored 28 points to surpass 1,000 for her career and hit an SIU record-tying seven 3-pointers on just eight attempts in the matchup.
Oliver followed that performance with a team-high 23 points along with five rebounds, two assists and two steals in a loss to league-leader Wichita State Saturday. The 51-point week helped lift Oliver's season scoring average to 18.0 points per game, which is tied for second in the MVC.
A freshman guard, Macklin tallied 14 points and a career-best nine assists against Missouri State followed by her first career double-double against the Shockers. Macklin scored 22 points and pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds in a close loss to the MVC-leaders.
Macklin continues to lead MVC newcomers in scoring and assists with averages of 16.1 points and 3.9 assists per game, which ranks fourth and third overall in the Valley respectively.
Oliver's honor marks the first MVC Player of the Week nod for SIU since Jasmine Gibson earned the recognition Dec. 26, 2007. Macklin's honor markes SIU's second Newcomer of the Week award of the season as Alexus Patterson earned the honor January 12.
This marked the first time SIU has swept the MVC's weekly awards since Jan. 15, 2006 when Jayme Sweere earned Player of the Week and Dana Olsen was named Newcomer of the Week.
