CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois freshman guard Cartaesha Macklin has earned Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week honors for the second consecutive week.
Macklin earns the honor after averaging 19.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in a pair of wins for the Salukis last week. The freshman guard led all scorers with 20 points to go along with four rebounds in a 75-57 win over Murray State Thursday before tallying 18 points with three rebounds and five assists in a 74-60 win over Evansville Sunday.
Macklin ranks fourth in the MVC in scoring with an average of 16.4 points per game, which leads all Valley newcomers and ranks third nationally among freshmen. The Mayo, Fla., native also ranks third in the MVC with an average of 3.9 assists per game.
The honor marks the third Newcomer of the Week nod for SIU this season. Macklin joins Illinois State's Jamie Russell, Drake's Kyndal Clark and Bradley's Shronda Butts as repeat Newcomer honorees. Russell is the only player that has earned Newcomer of the Week three times this season.
