TRUJILLO ALTO, PUERTO RICO - The Southern Illinois men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined to win the 8VA Copi Coqui Invite in Puerto Rico on Thursday, scoring 90 points. Individually, the women's team won the invitational and the men took second.
"We went to fulfill and obligation, and we really didn't know all these good schools would be there," head coach Rick Walker said. "Then, once it started, we started winning events. I'm proud of the way all of us competed. We had too many great individual performances to single out just one."
The Salukis got event wins from the men's 200 medley relay, women's 200 medley relay, Pamela Benitez (100 Free), Matt Parsons (100 Fly), Kristin Geppert (100 Breast) and the women's 500 free relay.
The women are next in action against Illinois on Jan. 16 at the Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium. Both the men and women host Washington (Mo.) on Jan. 21.
