CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois center Alexus Patterson has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week after her performances last week against Bradley and Northern Iowa.
Patterson averaged 12.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in two games for SIU last week, including the finest outing of her young career against UNI.
After posting six points and five rebounds Thursday against Bradley, the freshman center exploded for career highs of 18 points and 16 rebounds against the Panthers. The effort helped her improve her season rebounding average to 7.1 per game, which ranks ninth in the MVC and highest among Valley newcomers.
The Knoxville, Tenn., native has posted double-digit rebounding totals in five out of her last eight games. She is averaging 11.8 boards per game in MVC play, which ranks second in the league.
Patterson's Newcomer of the Week nod marks the first MVC weekly honor for the SIU women's basketball team since the 2009-10 season.
