BUCHANAN, Tenn. - The Southern Illinois men's golf team tied for fifth at the Skyhawk Fall Classic on Tuesday, Brandon Cauldwell tied for second overall just one shot behind the individual champion.
"We let this one slip away a little bit," head coach Leroy Newton said. "We had a chance to be one of the top teams in this tournament, but we just didn't post the scores we needed to in order to win."
Cauldwell was in the lead after shooting a 67 in the second round, giving him his third sub-68 score of his career. Cauldwell is the only golfer in school history to record three career rounds below 68. He birdied four of his last six holes to reach the score.
For the tournament, Cauldwell (211) was one stroke behind the individual champion, Tyler Shellnut, who shot a 66 to come back from a six-stroke deficit entering the round. Cauldwell has now finished among the top three golfers in three of the last four tournaments, including a win at the Purdue/Midwest Shootout in September.
"Overall, I played pretty well," Cauldwell said. "I caught a bad break in the last round with a shot that hit the cart path. Otherwise, I think I could have had a chance to win the tournament."
Cauldwell set a new career-best three-round score for a Par-72 golf course with his three-round score of 211, breaking his old mark by three strokes. He shot a 214 at the Wasioto Winds Fall Kick-Off in 2011.
Jeffrey Miller (219) matched Cauldwell for SIU's best score in the final round with a 73. He finished tied for 26th. Jake Erickson and Caleb Harms (221) tied for 33rd, and Drew Novara (225) tied for 44th. George Tate (231) tied for 66th competing as an individual.
Caleb Harms set a new career best single-round score with a 73 in both the first and second rounds. He has set a new career best in each of the five tournaments this spring. Novara's second-round 74 was also an SIU best.
Murray State won the tournament in a playoff over John A. Logan Community College. The teams played a one-hole, full-team playoff, which the Racers won. UT-Martin's Tyler Shellnut won the individual tournament by one stroke over Cauldwell, Murray State's Patrick Newcomb and John A. Logan's Tucker Guisewite
The Salukis close out the fall season with the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate on Oct. 22-23.
