Track and Field completes first day of Iowa State Classic

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois track and field team opened competition Friday at the Iowa State Classic recording 16 top-ten finishes.
Freshman Amiris Warren placed 16th in the preliminary round of the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.69. The 60-meter dash finals are set for tomorrow morning. Warren also competed in the 200-meter dash placing ninth among 43 competitors with a time of 24.98.
The Salukis competed in non-seeded events Friday, with seeded competition taking place Saturday.
"It was a good, challenging first day of competition," said SIU head coach Connie Price-Smith.
Tess Shubert placed seventh in the 400-meter dash recording a time of 56.70. Evelyn Scott competed in the 600, placing seventh with a time of 1:27.47.
Mobola Rotibi and Allison Gallo competed in the 800-meter run placing sixth and 23rd with times of 2:12.96 and 2:16.21, respectively.
In the women's pole vault, Caselynn Harding placed sixth with a height of 11-02.50.
Freshman DeAnna Price took the title in the unseeded weight throw with a toss of 61-05.75.
In action on the men's side, Dominic Williams placed 14th in the 200-meter dash. Jawon Smith finished 25th in the 800-meter dash recording a time of 1:55.33. T.J. Heffernan competed in the 800-meter dash placing 39th, he also competed in the one-mile run placing 12th with a time of 4:16.48.
Kendrick Branch had a successful day in the jumps competitions. Recording a height of 6-06.25, Branch placed fifth in the high jump. In the triple jump, Branch placed sixth with a distance of 45-03.75.
The Salukis took the one and two spots in the men's weight throw. Collin Otto placed first with a mark of 61-01.25 and Bradley Sauer placed second recording a throw of 60-02.00

The Iowa State Classic resumes tomorrow at 11 a.m. with the men's seeded pole vault and the men's seeded 3000-meter run
