SIU VS. WICHITA STATE
Southern leads its all-time series against Wichita State 35-26, although the Shockers have won the last four in the series. After starting out 7-0 in the MVC, WSU has lost three out of its last five to find itself tied atop the Valley standings with Missouri State and Illinois State. The Shockers have the second-best scoring defense in the league, allowing just 59.3 points per game while holding foes to an MVC-best 38.8 percentage from the field. WSU also has the Valley's top field goal percentage at 44.1 percent. The Shocker offense is led by the tandem of Jessica Diamond and Haleigh Lankster, who average 13.2 and 12.2 points per game respectively. Lankster also leads the MVC with an average of 2.7 steals per game and Chynna Turner is the team's top rebounder at 6.2 per game.
LAST TIME THEY MET
The MVC-leading Shockers held off a late-game push by SIU January 21 in Carbondale to preserve a 78-68 win and improve to 7-0 in Valley play. Teri Oliver led SIU with 23 points while Cartaesha Macklin pitched in 22 points and a career-high 13 rebounds for her first double-double as a Saluki. Chynna Turner paced the Shockers with 24 points while Haleigh Lankster had 17 and Jessica Diamond added 15.
SALUKIS CAN'T STOP BLUEJAYS
SIU couldn't find an answer for several long Creighton runs in an 80-64 loss to the Bluejays Saturday at SIU Arena. Creighton shot 52.8 percent from the floor, the highest of any SIU opponent this season. Cartaesha Macklin led Southern with 21 points, nine rebounds and six assists while Teri Oliver added 13 points and Alexus Patterson added 11. Sarah Nelson led the Jays with 25 points and Carli Tritz chipped in 19.
MACKLIN BREAKS FRESHMAN RECORD
SIU point guard Cartaesha Macklin broke SIU's freshman scoring record during SIU's loss to Creighton Saturday. Macklin scored 21 points against the Bluejays to surpass Cari Hassell's record of 382 from the 1994-95 season. Macklin is up to 392 for the season.
OLIVER FOR 3
Teri Oliver's 75 3-pointers through last week ties Christine Presswood (2009-10) for second-most in a season in SIU history. Oliver sits four shy of the record 79 set by Cari Hassell during the 1994-95 season. The junior guard broke SIU's career record for 3-pointers made earlier this season and currently ranks 16th in MVC history with 220 career treys. Oliver ranks seventh nationally with an average of 3.1 made 3-pointers per game.
OLIVER MOVING IN
Junior guard Teri Oliver has a shot at entering the SIU record book for season scoring if she continues at her current pace. With 407 points through last week, Oliver sits 26 points shy of ranking in the top 10 in school history for points in a season. If she finishes the year at or above her current clip of 17.0 points per game, she will also rank in the top 10 in school history for scoring average in a season.
SOUTHERN'S DYNAMIC DUO
Teri Oliver and Cartaesha Macklin have are on pace to become one of the most potent scoring tandems in SIU history. Oliver has scored 407 points for the season while Macklin sits at 392. If Macklin goes over 400, it will mark just the third time in SIU history two players have scored 400 or more points in a season. Also, their 799 combined points are 13 shy of cracking the top 10 in school history for highest two-player scoring total in a season. Oliver ranks fourth in the MVC with an average of 17.0 points per game while Macklin is fifth at 16.3 per game.

BUCKING THE TRENDS
Southern broke a few season-long trends last in its two games last week. The Salukis game against Drake marked its first win of the season when scoring less than 70 points. SIU is now 1-14 when scoring fewer than 70 points. Against Creighton, the Salukis suffered just their second loss of the season when shooting better than 40 percent from the floor. SIU is now 7-2 when shooting better than 40 percent.
A FEW OTHER TRENDS
The Salukis are 0-15 when shooting worse than opponents and 0-15 when shooting under 40 percent from the field. SIU is also 0-9 when playing on Friday or Saturday and 7-8 when playing on any other day of the week.
A WIN AWAY
SIU sits just one MVC win away from matching its best Valley win total under coach Missy Tiber. The Salukis won four conference games in Tiber's inaugural season in 2009-10. Southern has already posted its highest win total of the Tiber era with seven thus far.
