ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois junior Jake Erickson was named Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. Erickson has earned the honor three times this season.
Erickson joins four other SIU golfers to win the award three times. Brian Kolmer, Brian Norman, Kyle Hosick and Todd Obergoenner all won the weekly award three times in their careers. No SIU men's golfer has earned the honor four times in a career.
Erickson finished second at the Big Blue Intercollegiate on Tuesday, one stroke from winning his third tournament of the year. He recorded an eagle and birdied three of his final five holes to finish with a final-round 68, leading the Salukis from 11 strokes back to tie Tennessee Tech for second at the tournament. He has led the Salukis in five consecutive tournaments.
Erickson's final-round 68 was the fifth-best final-round score in school history and was his fourth round in the 60s this season. It led a Saluki charge that finished the third round with a 282, the third-best third-round score in school history.
Erickson lowered his season scoring average to 73.6, which would be the fourth-best single-season average in school history and the lowest since Norman recorded a 72.7 average in 2003-04.
The Salukis wrapped up the regular season at the Big Blue Intercollegiate and will close out the season with the MVC Championships on April 30-May 1.
