CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois softball team faltered in game one but rebounded in the nightcap as it split a Friday doubleheader with Indiana State.
The Sycamores entered the doubleheader winless in the Missouri Valley Conference but capitalized on cold hitting from the Salukis to take game one, 4-2.
The Salukis (21-10, 8-3 MVC) struck first with two runs in the first inning off a Sycamore error. Indiana State (13-21, 1-10 MVC) returned the favor as it answered with two runs to tie the game off a hit and an error in the second.
SIU's offense went stagnant for the remainder of the game as hits from Meredith Wilson in the second and the fourth innings were Southern's only hits in the game.
The Sycamores took the lead on an RBI single in the fifth and an RBI triple by pitcher Lindsey Beisser wrapped up their first Valley win.
"They out emotioned us all day and it's very disappointing and we were pressing playing from behind like it was the World Series," SIU head coach Kerri Blaylock said.
Beisser picked up the win as she struck out seven and allowed five walks. SIU's Katie Bertelsen moved to 7-6 with the loss as she notched three strikeouts in the effort.
In game two, Brittney Lang threw the second shutout of the season as the Dawgs rebounded for a 5-0 win.
Lang threw seven strikeouts, tying her career-high, as she moved to 6-3 overall with help from the Salukis' offense, which came alive with a 10 hits in the nightcap.
"'B' threw well and did what she needed to do to manage the game," Blaylock said.
The Salukis started things off hot in the first inning as Mallory Duran-Sellers led off with a single to kick off a stellar 3-for-4 performance in the game. Haley Gorman followed with a single and Allie VadeBoncouer brought both runners home with an RBI double.
Taylor Orsburn added an RBI single in the same inning to put the Dawgs up 3-0 after one inning.
Duran-Sellers added an RBI in the fourth and came around in the sixth to score off a wild pitch to add some insurance to the win.
Kalyn Harker added a 2-for-3 performance and Orsburn went 2-for-2 with a walk highlighting Southern's offense in game two.
Gorman, VadeBoncouer, and Wilson all contributed hits in the game. The Dawgs were also quick on the base paths in the doubleheader, stealing seven bases on the afternoon.
The Salukis and Sycamores are back in action tomorrow for the rubber match for the annual Strike Out Cancer game at 12 p.m. at Charlotte West Stadium.
