SKILLMAN, N.J. -- The Southern Illinois men's tennis team has been named to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's 2012 All-Academic Team, the ITA announced today.
This is the fourth consecutive ITA All-Academic honor the Salukis have garnered and the fifth out of the last six seasons (2007, 2009-12). In order to be recognized by the ITA, a team must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.
In addition to the team honor, the Saluki men landed four players on the ITA Scholar-Athlete team, including three returnees from last season's squad. Juniors Jordan Snyder and Orhan Spahic, along with sophomore Rafael Cuadrillero, are all repeaters from last season's ITA team. The Salukis added one more to the team this year with 2011 MVC Freshman of the Year, sophomore Jorge Cavero. According to ITA guidelines, a player must be a varsity letterwinner, have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, and have been enrolled at their school for at least two semesters.
"I am extremely proud of our guys," said head coach Dann Nelson. "Team GPA is very important to us and it is our goal to achieve this ITA team award each year. I am also extremely proud of the efforts of Jorge, Rafa, Jordan and Orhan as they finished the year with a grade point average over 3.5."
