CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois men's and women's cross country teams competed among themselves in an intersquad meet Friday at the SIU Early Bird.
Taking the women's 4K win for Southern was sophomore Sadie Darnell, who clocked in at 14:54.0, 10 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Kristen Levi. The top six spots for the women were taken by underclassmen, half of them freshmen.
In the men's 4K, it was more of the same. Freshman Brandon Shemonia ran unattached and won the race at 12:24.9, only two tenths of a second ahead of fellow freshman Oscar Medina. Sophomore Nick Schrader and freshman Juan Carrera weren't far behind, as the top four spots in the men's 4K were decided by less than a second.
SIU cross country will be back in action again next Friday, Sep. 7, at Eastern Illinois for the Walt Crawford Open in Charleston, Ill.
