WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Southern Illinois men's tennis team travels to the Purdue/Midwest Shootout for a 36-hole tournament on Sunday. Nine teams are set to compete at the Kampen Golf Course.
"We're looking forward to the challenge," head coach Leroy Newton said. "It's a tougher course and a tougher field than our first tournament, so we're looking forward to see how we measure up at a Big Ten school."
Southern will take six golfers to West Lafayette to compete at the par-72, 7,465-yard course. The teams will tee off at 8:30 a.m. ET with a shotgun start. The field includes SIU's first look at conference competition; Bradley is also in the field.
Southern finished fourth in its season-opening tournament, the Wasioto Winds Fall Kick-Off. Jake Erickson and Jeffrey Miller led the salukis and finished 12th overall. Erickson recorded his fifth career round in the 60s, which ties him for fourth-most such rounds in school history. He also played his 91st career round, which ties him with Sam Scheibal (1990-94) for third-most career rounds in school history.
Brandon Cauldwell finished tied for 19th, which was the 10th time in his career he has finished among the top 20. True freshmen Drew Novara and Ryan Haxel competed in their first career tournaments. Joe Goelzhauser also competed for SIU.
