NORMAL, Ill. - The Southern Illinois men's golf team is set to compete at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate on Sept. 22-23.The 54-hole tournament is being held at Weibring Golf Course in Normal, Ill. The teams will play 36 holes on Saturday and 18 on Sunday.
Fifteen teams are set to compete in the tournament. SIU gets one of its first looks at Missouri Valley Conference competition. Southern has only faced Bradley this year, beating the Braves by 37 strokes at the Purdue/Midwest Shootout. Illinois State hosts five MVC teams this year for the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate.
Southern placed third in the tournament last year and placed first of six MVC teams. All five Salukis that competed in 2011 are on the 2012 squad. Brandon Cauldwell led SIU and tied for third individually.
This year, Cauldwell is coming off his first collegiate tournament win. He dominated the Purdue/Midwest Shootout last Sunday by seven strokes. Only one other player in the 56-player tournament broke par in one round, and Cauldwell shot back-to-back 69's on the Par 72, 7,465-yard course. He earned MVC Golfer of the Week accolades for the week.
