NORMAL, Ill. - The Southern Illinois men's golf team finished ninth at the DA Weibring Intercollegiate on Sunday. Brandon Cauldwell tied for third individually, his fourth career top-five finish.
"We had a couple guys play well, but we could have done a lot better," head coach Leroy Newton said. "We passed up an opportunity to really show where we belong relative to the other teams in the tournament. We have a long season ahead, so we'll try to get things corrected and reach our potential."
Cauldwell, coming off an individual crown at the Purdue/Midwest Shootout, posted another strong tournament. Cauldwell (218) tied for third individually. He was second among Missouri Valley Conference individuals, one stroke back of Missouri State's Daily Young, who posted a 65 in the final round. Cauldwell made a 45-foot put on his last hole to stay tied for third.
"I've been hitting the ball pretty well," Cauldwell said. "My putting has been rolling in, which is probably the biggest thing. As a team, we know what we need to work on, so I think we all left some strokes out there that we can fix for the future."
Newcomer Caleb Harms was second for SIU, posting a career-best 75 in all three rounds. Jake Erickson (236) was third for SIU and tied for 56th individually. Joe Goelzhauser (237) finished one stroke behind Erickson and tied for 60th in the 81-player field. Jeffrey Miller (239) rounded out the Southern five.
Southern competed against four other MVC schools, placing behind host Illinois State and Missouri State and finishing ahead of Northern Iowa by 11 strokes and Bradley by 23 strokes.
Illinois won the tournament by 21 strokes. Central Arkansas' Pep Angles won the individual crown by four strokes over Missouri State's Daily Young.
Up next, the Salukis head to the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate on Oct. 1-2 in Manhattan, Kan.
