CARBONDALE, Ill. - Saluki Athletics will christen Richard "Itchy" Jones Stadium on Thursday, March 13 with a dedication ceremony for the new home of Saluki Baseball. The ceremony, which will begin at a time to be determined, will be open to the public.
The following day, the Salukis will open a three-game series against Illinois. Jones will be on hand to throw out the first pitch and deliver a speech prior to Friday's game.
The stadium, which is currently being constructed, will be named for Jones, who guided the Salukis to 10 NCAA Tournament appearances and three College World Series in 21 years as head coach.
The field will remain Abe Martin Field in honor of Glenn "Abe" Martin, who reinstated the baseball program and 1947 and served 21 years as the head coach.
The current clubhouse will be renamed for Dan Callahan, the second-winningest coach in SIU history. He compiled 442 wins in 16 seasons as head coach of the Salukis.
Representatives of both the Martin and Callahan families will be on hand to throw out the first pitch at games that weekend.
