CARBONDALE, Ill.-- The Southern Illinois University men's tennis team dominated play Friday against Eastern Illinois at home. The Salukis topped the Panthers 6-1 to now improve to 5-2 on the season.
SIU opened the day with doubles competition. Brandon Florez and Martijn Admiraal led the way in the No. 1 spot sealing the first victory 8-5. Jorge Cavero and Szymon Opieczonek followed suit topping their competitors from EIU, 8-3.
"We came out strong in doubles and played well," said SIU head coach Dann Nelson. " Szymon Opieczonek and Jorge Cavero are starting to play well together."
Badr Cherrdai continued his winning ways with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win over Kevin Bauman. Jonny Rigby and Martijn Admiraal also put away their opponents. Rigby took his match 6-4, 6-2 while Admiraal came out on top with a score of 6-1, 6-4. .
"There were many close sets during the coarse of this dual but we were able to win the big points when it mattered the most," said Nelson. "I am proud of the guys, winning the big points is what it is all about."
The Salukis continue their home stand tomorrow afternoon when they welcome Saint Louis University for a 1 p.m. match.
