MURRAY, Ky. - The Southern Illinois baseball team will visit Murray State for a nonconference game after splitting an abbreviated two-game series with Western Kentucky on Sunday and Monday. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed due to precipitation. First pitch on Wednesday is scheduled for 2 p.m.
WEDNESDAY'S STARTER Bryce Sablotny will make his third start of the season. He picked up the win in his Saluki debut, limiting UT Martin to two runs in five innings. In his second start, the junior allowed four earned runs in four and a third innings and recorded a no-decision in a loss to Austin Peay.
MURRAY STATE SERIES NOTES Southern Illinois leads the all-time series, 43-15, but has split the series with the Thoroughbreds in each of the last three years. In their last meeting with Murray State, the Salukis won an epic 3 hour, 15 minute game by a 13-10 final. In that game, SIU overcame deficits of 6-0 and 8-5 to outlast the Breds. Murray State will visit SIU on Tuesday, April 2.
SCOUTING THE THOROUGHBREDS Murray State was swept at home by Canisius this past weekend to extend its losing streak to four games. The Thoroughbreds rank fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference with a .276 team batting average. They are led by outfielder Brandon Eggenschwiler who is hitting .357. He has the team's only home run and leads the Breds with 10 RBI. However, Murray State has a team ERA of 7.30, which ranks 272nd out of 295 Division I teams. Wednesday's starter, Cody Maerz, will be making his first collegiate start after making two relief appearances this year. He has allowed four runs, two of them earned, off two hits in two and two-thirds innings of work.
WALKING DAILY Entering Monday's game, Cody Daily ranked 27th in the nation in walks per game with 10 free passes in nine games played. He now has 11 base on balls and is tied for the 31st highest total in the nation. Daily has drawn 11 of SIU's 39 walks this season and has recorded four multi-walk games.
ADJUSTED ROTATION With the previous weekend's series cut short by one game due to weather, Derek Fogel, who was originally scheduled to start the finale of the Western Kentucky series, will start on Friday against Northern Illinois. That moves Sam Coonrod and Cody Forsythe to Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
LOOKING AHEAD This weekend SIU will host Northern Illinois for a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 8 at 2 p.m. The Salukis will then travel to Middle Tennessee for a brief midweek series on Tuesday, March 12 and Wednesday, March 13.
