Nine-run Fifth Fuels Salukis to Belmont Sweep, Spot in MVC Tournament
05/10/2026 | 9:47:00 | Baseball
For the second day in a row, Belmont's Charlie Davis drew first blood with a leadoff solo homer in the bottom of the first, but the Salukis responded quickly once again. Tim Simay blasted a breaking ball over the left-field fence to tie the game in the second.
The Bruins retook the lead in the third at 2-1, and were able to hold on for an inning before SIU completely broke the game open.
Belmont starter Ridge Harvey was largely in control, but as soon as he was removed from the game after recording the first out in the fifth, the Salukis jumped on the bullpen. After Julio Guerrero was hit by a pitch, Jacob McKenzie, Cecil Lofton, Jaden Flores, Kristian Sprawling and Kye Watson all tallied run-scoring hits to give SIU an 8-2 lead. After starting the rally with a hit-by-pitch, Guerrero got to swing the bat in a massive way, depositing a two-run homer to center field to give the Salukis 10 runs in the game and nine in the frame, the most in a single inning by Southern this season.
The Salukis were close to ending the game in seven after scoring three more in the sixth. Lofton collected an RBI single before Xavier Farnum's sacrifice fly, and an RBI double from Gabe Petrucelli punctuated Southern's scoring with 13 runs on the day.
Dylan Petrey continued his recent shutdown stretch out of the bullpen, throwing 1.2 scoreless Sunday. The Pingree Grove, Ill., native has allowed just one run over his last 10 innings pitched.
Meade Johnson made his second straight appearance out of the bullpen in the seventh and surrendered a single run while earning a strikeout for eight of the nine outs he recorded, eventually earning his second save of the season, closing out SIU's 13-4 victory. His eight strikeouts accounted for over half of Southern's 15 total from the staff.
Petrucelli tallied his first four-hit day as a Saluki, while McKenzie (2), Simay (3), Lofton (2), Flores (2) and Farnum (2) each had multi-hit games.
