JONESBORO, Ark. - The Southern Illinois men's golf team is in fourth place after two rounds of the ASU Red Wolves Intercollegiate. The final round of the tournament will begin Tuesday morning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Jake Erickson shot a tournament-low 67 in the second round and is tied for seventh overall.
"I'm just tickled-to-death at how we're plaing.," head coach Leroy Newton said. "I'm proud of them for coming this far. We've just tried to improve each tournament. The next step is to finish the tournament with a great round tomorrow. We know we're capable of doing it, and we look forward to going out tomorrow and finishing strong."
Jake Erickson shots a 75 in the first round but rebounded with a four-under-par 67 in the second round, tied for the lowest round so far in the tournament. Erickson is tied for seventh after two rounds and trails the tournament leader by five strokes.
Erickson's 67 ties the lowest round of his career and the seventh-lowest round in Southern Illinois history. He offset a double-bogey on the par-5 13th with an eagle on hole 3. Erickson leads the tournament in par-4 scoring and was one of only eight golfers to score an eagle in Day One.
Brandon Cauldwell is two strokes behind Erickson after posting two solid rounds. Cauldwell was tied for sixth after an even-par 71 in the first round and is tied for 15th after shooting 73 in the second round. Cauldwell led the tournament in pars by two with 28 pars in 36 holes. Cauldwell is chasing his seventh top-20 finish in 10 tournaments this season.
Caleb Harms (147), Jeffrey Miller (150) and Joe Goelzhauser (152) also put together back-to-back solid rounds for Southern. None of SIU's five scorers shot worse than 76 in either round. Drew Novara competed as an individual and is tied with Goelzhauser for 59th in the 20-team, 112-player tournament.
With today's two rounds, the Salukis have posted five-straight rounds with a team score under 300; three of those rounds have been sub-290.
The Salukis lead the other two Missouri Valley Conference schools in the tournament. SIU leads Missouri State by six strokes and Northern Iowa by 20 strokes heading into the final round of the tournament.
