Salukis picked fourth in pre-championship poll

ST. LOUIS - The Southern Illinois women's golf team was picked to finish fourth at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship in the pre-championship poll of league coaches, the conference announced Wednesday.Southern received 70 points, including one first-place vote.
SIU returns three golfers from last year's team that finished third at the conference tournament. Cassie Rushing earned first-team All-Conference honors last year and finished second at the tournament, just two strokes from the tournament winner. Ashleigh Rushing and Shaina Rennegarbe both competed last year and finished in the top-25.
Missouri State received 94 points and four first-place votes to edge out Illinois State as the pre-championship favorite. Missouri State won the title last year, stopping a streak of four consecutive conference titles by Illinois State. The pre-championship favorite has went on to win the conference title in nine of the last ten years.
The MVC Championship will be played on April 21-13 at Porto Cima in Lake of the Ozarks, Mo., and will be hosted by Missouri State. The 54-hole tournament consists of one round each of the three days, and admission is free.
