Five Salukis named MVC Scholar-Athletes

CARBONDALE, Ill.-- Five members of the Southern Illinois softball team were named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Teams the league announced Monday.
Senior outfielder Morgan Barchan, sophomore outfielder Kalyn Harker, senior pitcher Brittney Lang and junior second baseman Jayna Spivey were all named First-Team MVC Scholar-Athletes while sophomore pitcher Alyssa Wunderlich earned Honorable Mention laurels.
Harker and Wunderlich both earn the first MVC Scholar-Athlete honors of their careers while Barchan, Lang and Spivey are all repeat selections. Barchan earned Honorable Mention honors in 2011 while Lang and Spivey were both First-Teamers in 2012.
SIU led the MVC with four First-Team selections for the second consecutive season. Southern has had at least two players named First-Team MVC Scholar-Athletes for 16 consecutive seasons.
