AUSTIN, Texas -- Saluki track and field waited eight hours to compete at Day Two of the NCAA West Region Preliminary Round Championships at the University of Texas on Friday after storms forced competition to be postponed.
Day Two was originally set to begin at noon with the women's discus before the inclement weather rolled in. All events scheduled for Friday were completed, with the exception of the men's hammer throw -- which, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday morning. J.C. Lambert, Bradley Sauer and Curtis Wideman will represent SIU in the event.
Southern had six athletes compete, including two Salukis who fell just short of qualifying for nationals.
Junior Kenya Culmer finished tied for 15th in the high jump at 1.70m (5-07.00), less than two inches within a berth to the national meet.
Sophomore Ashley Gaston fell less than three feet shy of a trip to Eugene, Ore., in the women's discus throw. Gaston threw a personal best 50.94m (167-01) for 15th place, which is now the fourth-best throw in Saluki history.
