Salukis in 10th after Day One of Redbird Invitational

NORMAL, Ill. -- The Saluki women's golf team began the 2013-14 season on Sunday at the Redbird Invitational, where they sit in 10th place overall. Southern has a two-round total of 621 (+45) with an eclectic group of two seniors, two freshmen and a sophomore.
Senior Cassie Rushing leads SIU and is tied for eighth overall out of 87 competitors at three under par and nine birdies after she shot a first round 74 and a second round 73. Those were the 57th and 58th career rounds in the 70s for Rushing at SIU.
Right behind Rushing is sophomore Mattie Lindner (155), who is tied for 33rd place. The final three competitors for Southern were separated by four strokes: freshman Brooke Cusumano (t-53rd), senior Alexis Gatton (t-63) and freshman Kristie Yang (t-66th). Yang, in her first collegiate action, posted the second-highest number of birdies for Southern at four.
Freshman Xianmei Jin competed as an individual, where she is tied for 49th place at 158 (+14). Jin scored four birdies in her first collegiate play as well.
The Redbird Invitational will resume for Day Two on Monday.
