CARBONDALE, Ill. - Junior Jonny Rigby was named MVC Scholar Athlete of the Week after going 3-1 overall at the ITA Central Regional tournament last weekend.
Rigby has been a constant leader and point of success for the Salukis so far this season. Last week, Rigby played in the singles main draw at the ITA Central Regional tournament - the only Saluki to do so without having to play in the qualifying round. Rigby took down a top-ranked player from Nebraska to advance to play 15th-seeded Nick Papac from University of Oklahoma where he fell in a tough, three-set match. Rigby also found success in doubles with partner Michal Kianicka as the two advanced to the round of 16 for the second straight year with upsets over two nationally ranked teams, Oklahoma State and Arkansas. Rigby's success carries over into the classroom as well, as he finished the 2013-14 academic year with a 3.38 cumulative GPA in management.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
