CARBONDALE, Ill.- In their final tune-up before the Missouri Valley Conference Championships, the Southern Illinois cross country teams competed against some of the top schools in the country at the ISU Pre-National Invitational on Saturday. The women finished a school best second place in the White 6K race, with the men finishing 28th in the Blue 8K race.
For the third race in a row, Kelley Gallagher was the top finisher for the Salukis, earning a 13th place finish with a time of 22:02.3. Earning a 28th place finish was Krista Menghini, crossing the finish line in 22:22.4. Rounding out the top five for SIU were Sadie Darnell (40th), Kristen Levi (43rd), and Tori Parry (61st).
After a strong showing by the women's squad, head coach David Beauchem praised the improvements Levi has made this season.
"Kristen continues to get better and that really helped solidify the women's score today," said Beauchem.
In the men's Blue 8K race, Oscar Medina earned a 45th place finish after crossing the line in 25:00.0. Juan Carrera had another consistent race for SIU, finishing the race in 25:24.1, to earn a 93rd place finish. Michael Castel followed Carrera, as he finished the race in 25:41.3, good enough for a 135th place finish. This marks the third straight meet that Medina, Carrera, and Castel have been the top three Saluki finishers.
In the Open races, Allie Sweatt finished the women's 6K race in 63rd place while Jonathan Vara earned a 62nd place in the men's 8K race.
SIU will have about two weeks to prepare for the MVC Championships on Nov. 1 in Carbondale, Ill., where they will look to defend their titles against their conferences foes. Information regarding the Championships can be found at the MVC Championships Information page.
