CARBONDALE, Ill.- Competing in their toughest meet of the season to this point, the Southern Illinois cross country teams put on a valiant performance at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday. The men's team earned a third place finish, while the women's team finished 16th against a strong field. The meet featured over 25 regionally ranked schools, including several nationally ranked teams.
In the men's race, SIU placed three runners in the top-five finishers in the Gold Division race. Michael Castel led the Salukis with a third place finish, running the 8K course in 24:02.5. Castel was followed by Juan Carrera who finished fourth in 24:03.9. Oscar Medina closed out the top three finishes for SIU, earning a fifth place finish with a time of 24:06.3.
Head coach David Beauchem liked what he saw from his men's team, but saw room for improvement.
"Today was another step forward for the men's team," said Beauchem. "Juan had a good race and he, Mike, and Oscar worked really well together. The gap back to our 4-5 runners is still an issue we have to address, but our training has shown progress. It just has to come together in our races."
The women's team competed against a tough field in the Blue Division 5K, and was able to run a strong race. Kelley Gallagher was the leading Saluki female, carding a 40th place finish with a time of 17:00.7. Sadie Darnell was the second fastest Saluki, finishing 53rd in 17:09.7. SIU's third finish came from Krista Menghini, who finished 67th with a time of 17:16.2.
The Salukis also had runners compete in the women's 5K JV race, with SIU earning a seventh place finish. Allison Gallo led the way with a 35th place finish with a time of 18:32.6.
SIU will have about two weeks to regroup before heading to Terre Haute, Ind., for the Indiana State University Pre-National Invitational on Oct. 18.
