Peoria, Ill.- The Southern Illinois University cross country teams wrapped up their 2014 season on Friday at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet. The men's team finished eighth of out 29 teams, while the women's team earned a 15th place finish out of 32 teams. Oscar Medina earned a spot on the All-Region team for his performance in the men's race.
As they have done all season, the trio of Medina, Michael Castel, and Juan Carrera were at the front for the Salukis. Medina scored a top-25 finish, finishing the 10K race in 30:41.6 for a 23rd place finish. With his performance, Medina also earned All-Midwest Region honors for finishing in the top-25. Castel followed Medina, crossing the finish line in 30:49.7, to earn a 33rd place finish. Carrera was the third Saluki to finish in the top-35, ending the race in a time of 30:50.1 for a 35th place finish. The men's eighth place finish was three spots higher than the 11th place finish in 2013.
"The men had a great race," head coach David Beauchem said. "Mike (Castel) and Oscar (Medina) were in the front group and raced really well. Juan hung in the top-50 and really closed well. It was a solid team finish for the men. Oscar ran the best race of his career. As a junior to be All-MVC and All-Region is a very well deserved honor for him and it shows the work he has put into his training."
Kelley Gallagher led the way for the Saluki women, finishing the 6K race in 21:03.1, for a 40th place finish. Krista Menghini finished the race in 73rd place with a time of 21:29.8. Kristen Levi and Sadie Darnell rounded out the top-100 finishers for SIU, finishing 88th and 100th respectively. Mobola Rotibi was the Salukis fifth point scorer, earning a 170th place finish.
"The women's team raced hard," said Beauchem. "It is a little disappointing from our goals and expectations, but we have come out of cross country healthy and we are ready for the track and field season."
Student-Athletes competing in cross country will also compete for the SIU track and field team. Their season will begin on Dec. 6, at the Saluki Fast Start in Carbondale, Ill.
