CARBONDALE, Ill.- Southern Illinois University baseball coach Ken Henderson announced three players have signed to play for the Saluki program. The Salukis signed a pair of left-handed pitchers in Joey Marciano and Seth Hackett, and two-way standout Logan Soole, a left-handed hitting outfielder/pitcher. Marciano and Soole have both sign Letter of Intents, while Hackett has signed a written offer of admission.
"Because of how young our current team is, we knew going in that this would be a smaller recruiting class," Henderson said. "However, it was an important group with specific needs, mainly left handed pitching and a left handed hitting outfielder. In addition to their talent, these three young men possess the intangibles that are important to the program. They are tough, hard-nosed kids with proven work ethics and most importantly, they are dedicated students."
Seth Hackett (6'2, 180, LHP, Elmwood, Tenn., Smith County HS)
Hackett is a left-handed pitcher that will join the Saluki pitching staff. Standing 6-foot-2, he finished his junior year with a record of 5-3 with a 2.02 ERA. In only 45 innings of work, Hackett compiled 73 strikeouts. He was also impressive in the batters box, hitting to a .315 batting average with five home runs. During his two seasons of playing, Hackett earned back-to-back 8-AA All-District honors. He is a product of the highly successful Tennessee Knights summer Baseball program that has also produced current Salukis Greg Lambert and Chase Slone.
"Seth continues our trend of recruiting success in Tennessee," Henderson said. "He is very athletic, extremely competitive, and has a great feel for pitching. He definitely has the ability to make significant contributions as a freshman."
Joey Marciano (6'4, 245, LHP, Chicago, Ill., John A Logan College)
Marciano is a 6-foot-4 left-handed pitcher out of Chicago, Ill.. In his first year at John A Logan College, he had a record of 8-2, while holding an ERA of 1.93. He also had an impressive 79 strikeouts in 79 innings pitched. He was honored for his pitching accomplishments by earning Region 24 All-Region and All-Conference honors. He was named Great Rivers Athletic Conference (GRAC) Freshman of the Year. Marciano is a 2013 graduate of Roberto Clemente High School in Chicago, Ill.
"With Joey, we are getting a pitcher that has proven he knows how to win at the college level," Henderson said. "He had a great year for coach (Jerry) Halstead as a freshman and continued to throw well this fall. He is an extremely gifted young man and should step in and make an immediate impact as a Saluki."
Logan Soole (6'0, 190, OF/P, Louisville, Colo., Monarch HS)
A 6-foot-0 outfielder and pitcher, Soole is one the best players in the state of Colorado. He is rated the No. 11 player in Colorado by Prep Baseball Report. During his junior year, Soole had a .435 batting average from the left side of the plate with four home runs. Soole showed his speed by stealing 15 bases on the year. On the mound, Soole finished his junior season had a 4-2 record and a 1.83 ERA. During that time, he also struck out 57 batters in 32 innings of work. As a batter during his freshman and sophomore years, Soole held a batting average of .340 and .388 respectively. He also had and ERA of 1.88 and 2.70 in those years, respectively. "Logan has all the tools required to be a big time player at this level," Henderson said. "He is a polished left handed bat and has tremendous speed. He also has the ability to help on the mound. Logan is a tough, aggressive player with outstanding baseball instincts and is a great fit for the program."
Coach Henderson praised his assistant coaches for the work they have done to put together a strong recruiting class for the Saluki program.
"Coach (P.J.) Finigan and coach (Ryan) Strain did another great job with this class and we are excited about these young men joining the Saluki family," Henderson said. "We are appreciative of all the outstanding people on campus that make this such a great place to recruit to, and we would specifically like to thank Kristina Stepps and Mallory Duran-Sellers from our academic staff and Chris Roth, our strength coach for their efforts on our behalf."
