ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois redshirt freshman running back Cameron Walter has been named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Newcomer of the Week, the conference announced Sunday. Walter had 210 yards rushing on 37 carries in SIU's 32-22 win over Missouri State on Saturday.
A redshirt freshman, Walter exploded for 210 rushing yards on 37 carries in his first career start in SIU's 32-22 win over Missouri State on Saturday. Walter, a walk on who came into the game with just 66 yards all season, became the first SIU player with more than 200 yards rushing since Deji Karim in 2009. His 37 carries are tied for 10th-most in a single game in school history.
Walter's 210 rushing yards are the most by any MVFC player this season and fourth most among freshmen in the Football Championship Subdivision. His 37 carries are the sixth-most of any back in the FCS this year.
Other MVFC weekly honorees include Western Illinois' Trenton Norvell (Offense), Northern Iowa's Xavier Williams (Defense), and UNI's Michael Schmadeke (Special Teams).
