Salukis Pick Up First Win of the Season Over SLU

The Southern Illinois men's tennis team got its first win of the season on Friday afternoon, topping Saint Louis University 6-1. The Salukis took the doubles point and five of six singles matches to get the victory.
"I am very proud of the guys," head coach Dann Nelson said. "We spoke about not being defined by our record. We have been working very hard to get this first win. Hopefully, we can keep the momentum going next week when we open at home vs Austin Peay."
Southern Illinois (1-4) got doubles wins on courts one and three. At No. 1 doubles, Michal Kianicka and Jonny Rigby cruised over Patrick Kella and Luis Miguel Flores, 6-2, moving their record to 11-5 on the year. On court three, Jorge Cavero and Szymon Opieczonek won 6-3.
All four of the doubles winners turned around and won their singles matches in straight sets. Rigby, who earned MVC Tennis Athlete of the Week last week, took a crucial first-set tiebreaker to win over Patrick Kella, 6-5(5), 6-4, earning Rigby his 10th win of the year. Kianicka cruised to a first-set win, 6-1, and took the second set 6-3. Jorge Cavero shutout Yehia El-Sallaly 6-0 in teh first set and took the second set 6-4.
Opieczonek topped Luis Miguel Flores, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles, and Filip Aleksic used a third-set super-tiebreak to win on court six, 6-3, 3-6, 10-3.
