Carbondale Acting Mayor Donald Monty said the city recognizes the mutual benefit of strong support for university athletics. He encouraged all residents to show their pride of Southern Illinois University by wearing maroon and white on Thursday, Aug. 28, as well as attending the first home game of the season when SIU hosts Taylor. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
Director of Athletics Mario Moccia, who accepted the proclamation, said Saluki Athletics conducted a number of community meetings to determine how to increase attendance and bring more fans and visitors into Carbondale on game day.
One new effort to accomplish greater community involvement is the (618) Salukis Initiative, where residents from designated communities in Southern Illinois can purchase advance $6.18 football tickets to their designated game and high school students can receive free admission.
Carbondale and Murphysboro Community Night will also be Thursday, Aug. 28. For tickets or more information call 877-SALUKIS or Steve Sowers at 618-453-5153
