CARBONDALE, Ill.- Led by Kelley Gallagher and Oscar Medina, the Southern Illinois University cross country teams dominated the Saluki Invitational on Saturday, with the men's and women's teams easily knocking off Southeast Missouri and Missouri State.
The women's team placed six runners in the top-10 to knock off SEMO and MSU. Gallagher paced SIU, finishing the 5K race in 17:39.77 to win the race. Sadie Darnell followed, finishing second with a time of 17:50.02. Krista Menghini (third), Mobola Rotibi (fourth), and Tori Parry (sixth) round out the top-five finishes for the Salukis.
Head coach David Beauchem liked what he saw from Menghini and the rest of his team.
"The real big step up was Krista Menghini stepping up into the role as a senior," said Beauchem. "The women really have some strong potential when we put everything together with Kristen Levi coming back into the group."
The men's team also had six runners finish in the top-10 to defeat SEMO. Medina led the Saluki men, finishing first in the 8K race with a time of 24:25.71. Michael Castel followed his season opening win in the Saluki Early Bird by earning a second place finish in a time of 24:52.96. Juan Carrera (third), Matt Hazel (fourth), and Nick Schrader (seventh) were other top-five finishers for the SIU men's squad.
Beauchem was impressed with what he saw out of Medina his season debut.
"He has handled the milage and the training really well," said Beauchem. "He is definitely moving through his progression as he has gotten to be a junior."
The Salukis will have some time off before traveling to South Bend, Ind., for the Notre Dame Invitational on October 3. That meet is set to begin at 1:45 p.m. CST.
