Southern Illinois finished 13th out of the 14 teams on Sunday at the David Toms Intercollegiate in Baton Rouge, La. SIU faced some tough competition at the tournament including defending National Champions LSU.
"If you look at where we finished, we had higher expectations than that," Saluki head coach Justin Fetcho said. "We did some good things and we did some things that we need to work on. For the first 14 or 15 holes of the tournament we were balanced between second and third, but then we hit a road bump."
SIU shot a 936 through the three rounds of the tournament to finish three strokes ahead of Louisiana-Monroe and seven strokes behind 12th place Navy. The Salukis finished 72 strokes over par on the tournament. SIU's third round score of 317 was the highest of any team on Sunday.
Individually, senior Drew Novara led the Salukis with a round of 74 on Sunday to finish tied for 20th. He was remarkably consistent as Novara's 37 pars were tied for first among all players.
Fetcho said the University Club's greens were some of the toughest SIU has played on, but Novara handled them well.
"You had to have good control of your golf ball going onto the greens and I think Drew did a good job of that," he said. "To be able to finish top-20 in a good field with some really good players shows that he did some good things. I hope he takes some confidence away from this week."
Freshman Peyton Wilhoit, bounced back from an 80 in the second round with a 76 in the third for his lowest round of the weekend. Wilhoit tied for 50th, while junior Matt Greenfield came in 61st. Freshman Luke Gannon tied for 64th place in his first career tournament, although he opened play with a 75 in the first round.
"Luke did a phenomenal job for his first 15 holes," Fetcho said. "He was under par and playing really, really well. He hit every shot right where he wanted to... For his first round on that golf course I was very pleased with the way he played."
LSU took advantage of their familiarity with their home course to finish as the David Toms Intercollegiate champions. LSU was 16 strokes ahead of Kansas State, which finished in second place.
SIU will be back on the course next week at the Kennesaw State Pinetree Intercollegiate in Kennesaw, Ga.
