CARBONDALE, Ill. - After three weeks off from competition, the Southern Illinois women's golf team wraps up the fall portion of the schedule starting Monday at the Red Wolves Classic in Jonesboro, Ark. The two-day tournament will open with 36 holes played on Monday, and 18 to be played on Tuesday.
"It will be close to three weeks since our last tournament and we have plenty of rest and focus to get back out there," head coach Alexis Mihelich said. "More importantly we have had some time to fine tune our chipping, which needed improvement. Now we are chipping closer to the hole so our scores should improve."
The Salukis are coming off of back-to-back tournament wins heading into the fall season finale. Hanna Netisingha took medalist honors in SIU's win at the UIC Fall Invitational on Sept. 19, with Brooke Cusumano finishing as runner-up. Southern followed that tournament with another strong performance at the Loyola Fall Invitational. Led by Sun Young Jung, the Salukis placed four golfers in the top-10 on their way to their second straight win.
"I believe we will close out the fall season with our best performance yet," Mihelich said. "We haven't broken 300 yet and we are due. All the tools are there from each player, they just have to go out there and get it done for three rounds. If we can close out this last tournament with a team victory, the fall season would be extremely successful. We needed to learn how to lead a tournament early, maintain the lead, and then close in the final round, or if we are down, can come from behind. We will need this confidence to play a tougher schedule leading into spring season competition"
SIU's lineup will consist of Cusumano, Netisingha, Jung, Mattie Lindner, and Kristie Yang. Competing as individuals will be Alice Ho and Morgan Reimler. Set to oppose the Salukis in the tournament will be host school Arkansas State, Jackson State, William Woods, and Quincy.
A recap will be available after both days of competition.
