CARBONDALE, Ill.-- The Salukis men's tennis team will host it's only home event for the fall season, the SIU Fall Classic, on Sunday. It will be SIU's final event of the fall.
The tournament was originally scheduled for Saturday, but has been moved to Sunday at 10 a.m. due to the possibility of inclement weather.
"We've had a really good fall, one of the best in years I think," head coach Dann Nelson said. "We expect to keep that going and to do really well this weekend."
Individual players from SIU and Eastern Illinois will compete in the one-day tournament. Play begins at 10 a.m. with one round of doubles matches. Two rounds of singles matches will follow doubles play.
This will be the second time this season the SIU and Eastern Illinois have played in the same tournament.
"We saw some of the Eastern guys at the Champaign Challenger," Nelson said. "We know most of their players from playing them in the fall and spring the last couple years."
Last year, SIU finished 13-11 overall against Eastern and three Salukis – Alex Pozo, Daniel Martinez and Peter Molloy – finished undefeated.
The Homecoming tournament offers SIU the opportunity to cap off what has been a solid fall campaign.
"I just want to finish strong," Nelson said. "I want to do well in both singles and doubles and put a nice cap on the fall season. Lets end with a bang."
Play begins at 10 a.m. on Sunday at University Courts.
