CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Saluki cross country teams will look to have runners qualify for the NCAA Championship, as Southern travels to Lawrence, Kan., for the NCAA Midwest Regional on Friday. The women's 6K race will start at 12 p.m., followed by the men's 10K race at 1 p.m.
The top-two teams in each race will qualify for the national meet, as will the top-four individuals not attached to a team already qualified. An additional 13 teams and a variable number of individuals are chosen through a national at-large selection process in the days that follow the regional meet.
The Saluki men will be represented by Oscar Medina, Brandon Shemonia, and Josh Maier this weekend. Shemonia and Medina are both coming off of strong performances at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship which saw Shemonia finish third overall and Medina fifth. Maier was Southern's third best finisher, crossing the race in 27th place.
Krista Menghini will be the lone representative for the women's team on Friday. Menghini has been the top runner for SIU's women's team all season, finishing as the top Saluki in every meet. The Fenton, Mo., native led SIU at the MVC Championships, finishing the 5K race in 24th place with a time of 17:50.95.
If the Salukis qualify any individuals for the NCAA Meet, that race will take place on Nov. 21 in Louisville, Ky.
