Salukis open season against TCU

OPENING DAY
The Salukis begin their 71st season of baseball with a three-game series at TCU starting Friday, Feb. 13 at 6:30 p.m. SIU has won its past two seasons openers.
FRIDAY'S STARTER
Redshirt senior Aaron Hauge gets the nod for SIU in the season opener. Hauge is the lone returning weekend starter from last season and posted a 4.00 ERA and a 3-4 record.
SATURDAY, SUNDAY STARTERS
Kyle Pruemer will take the mound on Saturday for the Salukis, while Alex Lesiak will make his SIU debut on Sunday. Pruemer made 17 appearances last season, all in relief. He finished the year with a 2-4 record and a 1.61 ERA. Lesiak, a junior college transfer from Parkland College, will close out the series with TCU.
SCOUTING THE SALUKIS
SIU is picked to finish eighth in the Missouri Valley Conference this season. The team returns eight position players and seven pitchers that saw action last year. Overall, the Salukis return 15 letterwinners from last season, while welcoming 15 new players to the ball club.
TCU SERIES NOTES
This will be the first meeting between the two schools in baseball.
SCOUTING THE HORNED FROGS
TCU is picked to finish first in the Big 12 Conference's preseason poll. The Horned Frogs are the current Big 12 Champions after finishing 2014 with a 48-18 record and an appearance in the College World Series. They return eight pitchers and four of their every day field starters. Pitchers Riley Ferrell and Preston Morrison were named to the Louisville Slugger preseason All-American team. Ferrell was also projected to be Player of the Year by Collegiate Baseball.
YOUTH MOVEMENT
The Salukis will be one of the youngest teams in the MVC, with 26 freshmen and sophomores on the team.
FRESHMAN ALL-AMERICAN
LHP Kyle Pauly returns for his sophomore campaign after being named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American last season. Pauly had a 2-3 record and a 1.43 ERA.
PRESEASON ACCOLADE
Freshman INF Chase Slone was Baseball America's pick to be the MVC Freshman of the Year.
WELCOME BACK
SIU regains the services of three pitchers that missed last season due to injury. Redshirt sophomores Anthony Shimkus and Jacob Williams, along with redshirt senior Bryce Sablotny will be available for the 2015 season after recovering from Tommy John surgery.
RETURNING PRODUCTION
The Saluki pitching staff returns six pitchers that combined for 14 wins last season. The six returnees also accounted for 42% of SIU's strikeouts.
UP NEXT
SIU will continue its eight-game road trip with a Wednesday afternoon matchup against Austin Peay on Feb. 18, before a three-game series at Eastern Kentucky.
