Salukis drop match at Valparaiso University, 5-2

VALPARAISO, Ind. - Just a day after the SIU men's tennis team earned its first victory of the spring season at University of Illinois-Chicago, the Salukis dropped their next match against the Valparaiso Crusaders, 5-2. With Sunday's loss, the Salukis drop to 1-5 overall.
SIU junior Jonny Rigby and sophomore Michal Kianicka each continued their four-match win streak in singles competition at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, both overcoming their opponents in three hard-fought sets. The rest of the singles matches proved to be a struggle for the Salukis, as their strong efforts went unrewarded, dropping all four matches.
"Jonny and Mike continue to play well for us, but we are struggling in the other singles positions," head coach Dann Nelson said.
In doubles competition, Alex Pozo and Michal Kianicka earned a point for the Salukis, topping Valpairaiso's top doubles team, 6-2. The other Salukis duos were unable to pick up wins, however.
The SIU men's tennis team is set to return home for five consecutive matches beginning Friday as the Salukis look to bounce back against McKendree University, followed by Eastern Illinois University on Saturday.
