Salukis fight, but fall 5-2 to undefeated Austin Peay

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - The Saluki men's tennis team (0-4) came up short on Friday night, falling to Austin Peay (3-0), 5-2.
SIU claimed victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots by Jonny Rigby and Michal Kianicka, respectively. Rigby rallied from behind, falling 3-6 in the opening set, but coming back to take the following sets, 6-3 and 6-4.
The two were not so successful in doubles, however, losing only their third match of the season, 6-4. Daniel Martinez and Max Phipps were able to pull off a win at No. 2 doubles to earn the Salukis a point, topping their opponents 6-2.
Peter Molloy and Szymon Opieczonek played tough at No. 3 doubles, coming close with match point, before falling 7-6 (0-2). Opieczonek put up a fight in singles as well, trailing 5-1 in the first set and coming back to tie 5-5 before losing the two deciding points to fall to his opponent.
"We have to be able to close out our matches," head coach Dann Nelson said. "That's what we are struggling with right now. We have to play with more consistency."
The Salukis are scheduled to face University of Illinois-Chicago and Valparaiso next weekend on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
