NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Southern Illinois baseball team fell behind early and was unable to rally in a 9-4 loss to Belmont Tuesday in Nashville, Tenn.
A recurring trend this season for the Salukis (2-13) has been to fall behind early and today's game was no different.
SIU starter Austin McPheron loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the second inning with two hit batters and a walk. The Bruins (5-8) took advantage of McPheron's control issues and scored five runs on only one hit in the inning.
"We didn't give ourselves a chance today," SIU head coach Ken Henderson said. "You're battling uphill all day from there. We have to find a way to get the lead in the game, but we can't do that when we are giving up big innings like that."
SIU answered with a pair of runs in the third inning. Braden Mosley led-off the inning with a walk. After a one-out walk to Will Farmer, Greg Lambert singled to load the bases and extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Jake Hand followed with a one-run single, J.C. DeMuri drove home another run on a fielder's choice, cutting the deficit to 5-2.
The Salukis inched closer with another run in the sixth inning. Logan Blackfan hit a single, but an error on Belmont's center fielder allowed him to get all the way to third base. Taylor Martin made Belmont pay for the error with a sacrifice fly to score Blackfan and make the score 5-3.
Just when it looked like Southern was back in the ball game, the Bruins scored three runs in the bottom half of the sixth to regain its five-run lead.
SIU continued to battle, scoring a run in the seventh inning when Hand doubled to right centerfield, scoring Lambert. It was Hand's second RBI of the day and it would be the last run Southern would get in the game. The Salukis finished the game with seven hits, with only one going for extra bases.
"We just have to keep working," Henderson said. "We battled back and I'm proud of those guys for doing that"
The Salukis will continue its five-game roadtrip with a three-game series at the University of Illinois starting on Friday.
