Patterson earns MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week recognition

ST. LOUIS - SIU sophomore softball outfielder Merri Anne Patterson earned the Missouri Valley Conference's female Student-Athlete of the Week honor, the league announced Wednesday. Patterson was also named the MVC Softball Player of the Week on Monday after hitting two game-winning home runs in a weekend sweep of preseason MVC favorite Wichita State.
Patterson hit .462 in SIU's 4-0 week. She slugged 1.231 in the four games, going 6-for-13 with a double, three home runs, seven RBIs, five runs scored and a stolen base. In the series opener with Wichita State, Patterson hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth that was the difference in a 4-3 win. In the series finale, Patterson hit a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the seventh in a 7-6 win.
The Lynville, Tenn., native holds a 3.9 GPA in exercise sciences.
SIU heads to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to face Northern Iowa for a three-game set March 28-29. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at Noon CT and a single game on Sunday at Noon CT.
