Pitching woes hurt Salukis in 11-1 loss to Belmont

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Belmont scored 11 unanswered runs to beat Southern Illinois, 11-1, as the Saluki pitching staff yielded seven walks and hit four batters at Itchy Jones Stadium on Tuesday night.
"We were not good enough on the mound today," SIU head coach Ken Henderson said. "They are an awfully good ball club. They are one of the best offensive clubs that we will play all year. We have to make them earn stuff. When you give them 11 free passes and put people in front of their good hitters, you are going to give up a lot of runs."
Southern (5-26, 1-5 MVC) jumped on the Bruins (17-13, 8-3 OVC) early, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Will Farmer collected the first Saluki hit of the game when he knocked the ball just past BU's third baseman. Logan Blackfan then sent a deep shot over the centerfielder's head for a double, scoring Farmer for the early lead.
SIU would not lead for long, as the Bruins took a 2-1 edge in the top of the second. After a lead-off triple by Tyler Fullerton, Nick Egli took Alex Lesiak deep over the left field fence, scoring a pair of runs. It was the first of an 11-run Bruin onslaught over six innings.
Lesiak (1-2) gave Southern 3.1 innings on the mound in the loss. He surrendered four runs on seven hits, while striking out one batter. Jack Granath made his Saluki debut, striking out one hitter in his one inning of work.
SIU finished the game with six hits. Blackfan and J.C. DeMuri had two hits each to lead the Salukis.
"Offensively, I thought that we were competitive early," said Henderson. "When the game got out of reach, we gave away a lot of at-bats. I thought we played good defense, we just did not pitch well enough today."
The Salukis wrap up their five-game homestand on Wednesday with a game against Arkansas State. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Itchy Jones Stadium.
