CARBONDALE, Ill. - Junior Mattie Lindner and sophomore Brooke Cusumano were named MVC Scholar Athletes, the conference announced on Friday. This is the first time in both Lindner and Cusumano's careers that they've earned Scholar Athlete recognition.
Brooke Cusumano is a sophomore accounting major with a 4.0 cumulative GPA. Most recently, Cusumano finished second at the MVC Championships, finishing with the lowest round on the final day with a 74, and earned MVC All-Conference and the Elite-18 Award.
The Elite 18 Award honors the highest achievement in academics and athletics by a student-athlete in each MVC-sponsored sport, and is awarded to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average after competing in the athlete's respective sport's championship. Cusumano is the first women's golfer from SIU and only the ninth Saluki all-time to earn the Elite 18 award since it was first given in 2011.
This season, Cusumano finished as SIU's top golfer in six different tournaments, and placed in the top-five at three. She averaged 78.07 strokes, the lowest on the team, and helped the Salukis win three championship titles this season.
Mattie Lindner has also been a driving force on the team this season, finishing as SIU's top golfer at three different tournaments and earning the first individual champion title of her career as the top finisher at the 21st annual Saluki Invitational. Following her top finish, Lindner earned MVC Golfer and Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors. She was also named MVC Golfer of the Week earlier in the season after her second-place finish at the Saluki Shootout.
Lindner averaged 79.99 strokes this season, helping advance the Salukis to three championship titles. She is studying journalism and has a 3.79 cumulative GPA.
