CARBONDALE, Ill. - On the heels of her first-career tournament win as a Saluki, Brooke Cusumano has another accolade to add to her resume, after she was named the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Golfer of the Week by the league office today.
The St. Louis native was stellar for the Salukis at the Murray State Invitational, carding back-to-back rounds of 74 to earn her first medalist honor and guide Southern to a second-place team finish. After finishing the first round in a tie for second-place, Cusumano produced another strong round to gain the lead and hold-on to win by one stroke.
"You have to be a medalist for these honors, as someone in the Valley wins a tournament each week," head coach Alexis Mihelich said. "This was her week. There isn't a more determined, motivated, and enthusiastic athlete out there. She is one of a kind and her family should be very proud of her."
Cusumano is no stranger to earning honors and awards, as she was selected as the MVC Elite 18 award recipient last season. She was also an MVC All-Conference Selection, as well as MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week after a runner-up finish at the MVC Championship. Along with her accolades on the golf course, Cusumano is also a two-time WGCA All-America Scholar that holds a 4.0 GPA in the College of Business.
Cusumano and the Salukis return to action on Saturday, when the team travels to Lemont, Ill., for the UIC Fall Invitational.
