Salukis win doubles brackets at Purdue Fall Invitational

WEST LAFAYETTE, IND.-- The Salukis continued their fast start to the 2015-16 season Sunday with a historic day at the Purdue Fall Invitational.
Southern won the doubles bracket in both Flight A and Flight B, and was a finalist in the Flight C bracket. In Flight A, the duo of Jonny Rigby and Mike Kianicka defeated Lewis's Mate Srdanovic and Alan Braschinsky, 8-2. In Flight B, Alex Pozo and Wilder Pimentel defeated Ball State's Colin Rigney and Conner Andersen, 8-3, to win the their doubles bracket. Peter Molloy and Daniel Martinez advanced to the finals of the Flight C bracket, but lost to Eastern Kentucky's Indra Patwardhan and Diogo Soares, 8-6.
"Today was a big day for Saluki men's tennis," head coach Dann Nelson said. "We ended 9-3 today after going 12-1 yesterday."
In singles play, Rigby, Kianicka, Pimentel and Pozo all advanced to the semifinals in their respective brackets.
The Salukis added to their successful day with several broken records. Rigby and Kianicka's four doubles wins this weekend moved them to second all-time on SIU's doubles wins list with 35. The duo of Mickey Maule and Fabiano Ramos are in first all-time with 44 doubles wins.
Rigby also moved to second all-time in individual doubles wins with 53 total. He is only two wins behind Brandon Florez, who is in first place all-time with 55 wins. Rigby has won seven matches total in the last two days, which moves him into fourth place all-time on SIU's total wins list. He passed Bob Sprengelmeyer for fourth with 112 wins.
"I'm so proud of all the guys," Nelson said. "We compete as a team and are really rolling at this tournament. Hopefully we can keep it going tomorrow in singles."
