Salukis finish seventh at Redbird Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The SIU women's golf team wrapped up their first tournament of the season on Monday, finishing in seventh place at the Redbird Invitational in Bloomington, Ill. The Salukis shot 931 over the two-day tournament to open the 2015-16 season.
After sitting in a tie for 31st place after the first day, Brooke Cusumano finished the tournament shooting 229 (77-79-73) to finish in a tie for 14th place. Cusumano's 73 in the final round was the lowest round for any Saluki golfer this weekend.
"Brooke really trusted her line in her final holes and made some clutch putts," head coach Alexis Mihelich said. "This round gets her confidence back."
Freshman Sun Young Jung looked good in her Saluki debut, shooting a 79 in the final round of play. Jung finished tied for 33rd in her first collegiate tournament.
"My freshman played solid for her first college tournament in the line-up," Mihelich said. "There are only good things to come this season with her game."
Hanna Netisingha ended the day in a tie for 23rd place, shooting 232 (77-77-78). Xianmei Jin tied for 17th place, shooting 231 (77-75-79), competing as an individual.
"This tournament showed us our weaknesses and where we were losing some mindless strokes," Mihelich said. "We will make the necessary adjustments and hopefully we can defend our title next week at Murray State."
Southern returns to action on Sept. 14, when SIU travels to Ledbetter, Ky., for the Drake Creek Invitational.
