CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois baseball team recently posted the second-highest GPA in program history with a 3.28 team GPA during the fall 2015 semester. The accomplishment is second only to last year's squad, which recorded the best fall (3.307) and spring (3.07) GPAs in program history.
"It has been really fun to see that academics is something that the entire team takes pride in," academic adviser Mallory Sellers said. "Coach Henderson has really bred a culture that encourages high achievement in the classroom. They help each other out and they want to do well. They are wonderful young men that I really enjoy working with."
Twenty-three of the 32 players on the roster earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher for the semester. Junior Ryan Sabo posted a perfect 4.0 GPA. Under Henderson, the Salukis have earned 13 MVC Scholar-Athlete awards.
"This group has done a great job of creating, and continuing to build on, a culture of academic success," head coach Ken Henderson said. "I am extremely proud of their hard work and dedication. Most importantly, they understand what it truly means to be a student-athlete. I also need to praise our academic development staff, specifically Kristina Stepps and Mallory Sellers, for their efforts on our behalf."
SIU opens the 2016 season on February 19 with a three-game series at McNeese State.
